Jesus Is A Cowboy Notes

Notes on the Songs

"Be Still"  --  This song is inspired by Psalm 46:

Psa 46:1 [[To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth.]] God [is] our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psa 46:2
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

Psa 46:3
[Though] the waters thereof roar [and] be troubled, [though] the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

Psa 46:4
[There is] a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy [place] of the tabernacles of the most High.

Psa 46:5
God [is] in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, [and that] right early.

Psa 46:6
The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.

Psa 46:7
The LORD of hosts [is] with us; the God of Jacob [is] our refuge. Selah.

Psa 46:8
Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.

Psa 46:9
He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.

Psa 46:10
Be still, and know that I [am] God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

Psa 46:11
The LORD of hosts [is] with us; the God of Jacob [is] our refuge. Selah.

"Rap Star" -- This song came about after a conversation with a friend who expressed that he didn't think that rap was a viable form of worshipping God in a church.  I disagree.  Thus, the song.  But I did realize in writing it, that I was being a bit sarcastic, and Player A was emerging... I did become proud and judgmental of my friend, and so, "Rap Star" became a part of the "Jesus Is A Cowboy Musical Production".

"NOW" -- The individuals carrying the "ACCEPT DIVERSITY" signs were individuals who really don't care much about what sign they are carrying... they carry the sign only because "everyone else" is doing it.  These are the individuals who sit on the fence, and only do things for show... thus, the frustration of Player B.  This song was inspired from my days in college when the word "diversity" was tossed around frequently by people who really didn't care about it at all, but had simply jumped on the band wagon.

"Puppy Love/Noah" -- These two songs came about after watching my 2-year old son playing with our puppy Bolt.   A fun conversation between my son and our puppy.  A nice remembrance of things that are important and beautiful to me.  But as for Player C, something easy to use as a "see what wonderful things I do!" when there's so much more that lies beneath the surface.

"Deceptive Beauty" --

"Candy Misery"
--

"Never Lasting"
--

"Deception Ego" -- This song was inspired by the story of Martha and Mary and my own busy-ness. Martha and Mary are two sisters who Jesus come to visit (the gospel of Luke, chapter 10, verses 38-42):

Luk 10:38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

Luk 10:39
And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

Luk 10:40
But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

Luk 10:41
And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

Luk 10:42
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

"Jesus Is A Cowboy" -- This song was inspired by a Bible discussion.  We were talking about Psalm 23 "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want", when a friend of mine pondered:  "Why sheep?  You know, I think Jesus is a cowboy!"  Psalm 23 follows:

Psa 23:1 A psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

Psa 23:2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

Psa 23:3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Psa 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, [fn] I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psa 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Psa 23:6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

"Judgment"
--

"Close Your Mouth" -- There were so many times when in conversations I found myself speaking out-of-turn to others (usually causing some sort of problem!).  This song was inspired by the book of James, Chapter 3, verses 4 and 5:

Jam 3:4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.

Jam 3:5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.

"Look Beyond"

"Slow It Down"
